I absolutely love my Playon Desktop software. I don’t remember how long I have had it for, but during the past few years my Wife and I were able to record most of the shows that we enjoy. Couple these with a few Complete Series programs, and we have a marvelous data library. If you assume we paid $39.99 for the software (I can’t remember the price but it was low), we have recorded over 10,000 shows for less that 4/10ths of a single penny. Tell me — how can that be considered expensive?

+ PROS: Desktop version is incredibly cheap for what you get. I absolutely love this program with my cost per episode recorded being down to 4/10ths of $0.01 or about 12 cents for a full season. Have had great service those few times we had problems, but then, we did exactly what the help desk told us to do and only once did it take a second call to get it fixed.
    - CONS: Would like to add additional streaming sites such as Philo. Other than that I cannot think of any real problems.

I started using PlayOn Desktop in fall of 2017. I like the program, when it’s working. I realize that the services we are recording from make changes that makes the PlayOn developers play a game of whack-a-mole. That is not my complaint. My complaint is:

When there is an issue, they tend to blame the end user. “It’s your fault,” then they release an update that fixes the problem, but don’t have the spine to admit it was their fault.

Recently, as far back of June of this year [2020], a new issue started. I saw an error message after starting PlayOn that said auto-updates failed, then it crashed. Auto-updates? In the nearly three years I have been using it, I never saw anything about auto-updates. I certainly don’t remember allowing them when installing the application. So, I tried to restart the app but the service failed to start. I then checked the PlayOn release notes webpage, and conveniently, an update had just been released that day. I installed it, problem solved. I then checked the settings, no mention of auto-updates. One month later it happened again. This time when I tried to restart the service I noticed it said the MediaMallServer.exe file was missing. Missing? How can that be? I checked, and sure enough, it was GONE. PlayOn deleted the file. I checked and again, conveniently, an update had just been released that day. I installed it. Nearly a month later it happened again. So I contacted support and was told “It’s your fault.” Specifically Bill said, “It’s likely this issue is being caused by this PC’s security software blocking PlayOn.” Naturally. It’s always the end users problem. However, I don’t have any security software installed. I use the firewall that comes with Windows, and it wasn’t blocking anything to do with PlayOn. I had also made a post at Reddit about it [https://www.reddit.com/r/PlayOn/comments/i3s9ga/disappearing_mediamallserverexe_file/] and Thesandman21 PlayOn Support Tech decided it wasn’t any security software, it was the anti-virus software I DO NOT have installed. It’s clear the PlayOn mantra is, Always. Blame. The. End. User.

I ended up locking the MediaMallServer.exe file. Twice since 8/9/2020, this happened again, but they were unable to delete the file so I was able to restart the server and use the software I paid for. Today, 8/14/2020, it happened again but this time, since the MediaMallServer.exe file is locked, they deleted the PlayOn.exe file. Fortunately, I had just made a backup of all the files the day before and I just copied the file into the MediaMall directory.

I told Bill, Trevor, as well as PlayOn’s CEO Jeff Lawrence, and it’s COO Tracy Burman, that as I have explained, PlayOn is deleting files and causing the program to become inoperable. If it continues, I’ll contact an attorney and file complaints with the attorney general offices in my state, the states of NY and WA, the FBI’s cyber division, the FTC and whatever legal authority necessary in Denmark and/or European Union. Perhaps what is needed is a class action.

+ PROS: It records your favorite TV shoes and movies.
    - CONS: To many

The only reason Playon gets a decent review on is the refund policy. In fact, these clowns are far too eager to give out a refund, rather than actually provide a working, proper product.

Support is incompetent, rude. Software is glitchy as anything. From randomly ‘not working’ for no reason (seriously, no reason) to hanging on videos for hours on end to not testing, or optimizing for HDD performance, this is the worst software I’ve run across in almost 40 years of computer use.

This can work, if you hold it’s hand, baby it, and tell it what to do. However, it takes a LOT of babysitting.

+ PROS: When it works, it works (alright)
    - CONS: Pathetic supportGlitchy softwareUsers are the beta testersRude support

    - CONS: takes my money for new credits but doesn’t give me any credits

This is great software. I’ve been an IT person for years and I build and am a power user of computers.
I paid for these streaming services and I should be able to watch them whenever I like.
I travel a lot and streaming is just not practical in most areas and I want what I paid for.
I record all my shows and watch them when I want. THAT is entertainment.

+ PROS: Everything about it is good. Never any glitches or problems. I have DSL and good wifi.If you have good connections you shouldn't have a problem either.
    - CONS: A little expensive to buy the desktop version but really well worth it when I can record over 300 shows and watch what I want when I want on my laptop and even cast it to my TV. win win win

  6. I am trying to decide whether or not to try this product. The negative reviews say nothing about the hardware they are trying to run on (is it a homemade ‘game’ box, or is it a standard, name brand, relatively new box running a standard, current OS. I.e., if you’re running a PC, is it running Windows 10 or something that the publisher does not say is supported? If it’s not supported, you have to reason to expect it to run. You can never expect anything, btw, to run on an emulator.

  7. Did you call to attempt to get the problem straightened out?

  8. Forgive me, but based on your post, I have to think that the rudeness wasn’t all from their end. Even if it was, when you start off with the thought that the guy on the other end is a clown, you won’t tend to get a good result quite as often.

Let me guess, you have a homemade PC with about 35 graphics processors in it, running goddess only knows what OS, but you hate Window 10 so you don’t run it. If you’re running Windows, it’s not a version that they say they support, right? You’re a “coder”, right? But you spend a lot of time at GitHub playing with the other coders who don’t understand that a coder isn’t doo doo without an actual programmer to tell him how to do things. You write “apps” in one of the pseudo-4GL languages because it’s too much trouble to use Java or even, goddess forbid, an actual grown-up programming language, and you use about 113 libraries written by some dude that lives in his mom’s basement. You almost certainly don’t do the IT thing for a living.

You gripe because they don’t test enough (nobody does any more), but you actually think that it’s possible to test your own code rather than run regression testing against it, then hand it off to an experienced tester. You think that the product is pricey, though given that they have thousands of man-hours in it, it’s cheap as dirt.

Your biggest gripe is apparently that you said you didn’t like what you bought, so they gave you your money back. What terrible people!
